Description

Delicious Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies with a soft center and a crinkled sugary exterior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 3 oz bittersweet chocolate (melted and slightly cooled)
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar with a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract, red food coloring, and melted bittersweet chocolate until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until a dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies tender.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This helps the dough firm up and ensures the crinkle effect during baking.
  6. Place the granulated sugar in one shallow bowl and the powdered sugar in another.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop out 1 tablespoon-sized portions of chilled dough and roll them into balls.
  8. Roll each dough ball first in the granulated sugar, then generously in the powdered sugar. The granulated sugar helps the powdered sugar stick better and enhances the crinkle effect.
  9. Arrange the coated dough balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until the cookies are set around the edges and slightly soft in the center.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
